Grower Champagne

Champagne is the world’s most celebrated sparkling wine. Born in France’s Champagne region, it boasts some of the most iconic names in wine: Moët, Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot, Cristal.
Yet there’s another face to Champagne: a rich landscape of small, family-run producers upholding generations-old farming traditions and crafting remarkable bottles that rarely make the spotlight.
Grower Champagnes (or 'RM' Recoltant-Manipulant) is Champagne made by the farmer who grows the grapes that go into the bottle. This differs from the 'Grand Marques' who buy grapes from many small growers, often in addition to growing some of their own grapes.
Grower Champagnes differ from Grand Marques Champagnes in several ways, mainly working on much smaller scales and using only the Grower's own fruit. This means Grower Champagnes typically have: more terroir focus, more focus on consistent farming, and often more vintage focus (although many Growers do produce Non-Vintage wines.
Ultimately, while neither style is necessarily better, Grower champagnes often can give attention to detail that is not possible for the large Grand Marques and allow for more vineyard or vintage expression.
