Few estates in Montalcino combine history, tradition and consistency quite like Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona. The estate's origins date back to the 17th century, centred around the historic Palazzo built by Fabivs de' Vecchis, Bishop of Montalcino and Abbot of the nearby Abbey of Sant'Antimo. The property later passed through several noble families before becoming part of the Ciacci family in 1877. Following the marriage of Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona, a direct descendant of Pope Pius II, and Elda Ciacci, the estate adopted the name it proudly carries today.

A defining moment came in 1985 when Countess Elda Ciacci, having no heirs, entrusted the entire estate to Giuseppe Bianchini, who had managed the property for many years. Rather than simply preserving its legacy, Giuseppe transformed Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona into one of Brunello's benchmark estates, investing heavily in the vineyards and winery while expanding the estate's reputation internationally. Today, the winery remains family-owned, with Giuseppe's children Paolo and Lucia Bianchini continuing his vision, while the next generation is now actively involved in both viticulture and winemaking.

The estate lies on the prized south-eastern slopes of Montalcino, near the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate and the magnificent Abbey of Sant'Antimo. Covering approximately 195 hectares, the property includes around 50 hectares of vineyards alongside olive groves, woodland and rolling Tuscan countryside. The vineyards sit within the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia Natural Park, where warm days, cool nights and constant ventilation create ideal conditions for producing structured yet elegant Sangiovese.

The vineyards are planted exclusively to Sangiovese Grosso for Brunello production, using a massal selection taken from the estate's oldest vines. These low-yielding selections produce loose bunches with thick-skinned berries, delivering concentration while retaining freshness, even in more challenging vintages. The soils are predominantly Eocene marl and shale with a medium-textured profile, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the finesse, mineral tension and longevity that define the estate's wines.

At the heart of the estate is the celebrated Pianrosso vineyard, a single site covering just under 12 hectares between 240 and 360 metres above sea level. It is widely regarded as one of the great vineyards of Montalcino and provides the fruit for both the Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso and the flagship Vigna di Pianrosso Riserva Santa Caterina d'Oro, produced only in exceptional vintages. Alongside meticulous vineyard work, the estate combines traditional ageing in large oak casks with a modern underground winery designed to maintain naturally stable temperatures, allowing fruit purity and vineyard character to remain the focus.

Today, Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona stands among the elite producers of Montalcino. While deeply rooted in centuries of history, its reputation has been built on a relentless commitment to quality, producing Brunello that consistently balances power with elegance, generosity with precision, and faithfully expresses one of Tuscany's finest terroirs.
