Mount Mary is a family-owned, single-vineyard estate situated in the heart of Victoria's Yarra Valley, east of Melbourne. Established in 1971 by John and Marli Middleton, it was among the pioneering vineyards that helped revive the Yarra Valley's reputation as one of Australia's leading fine wine regions.

The history of viticulture in the Yarra Valley dates back to the 1850s, when Swiss settlers, inspired by the great wines of France, recognised the region's climatic similarities to Bordeaux and Burgundy. Their early efforts would later inspire a new generation of winemakers, including John and Marli Middleton.

During the 1960s, the Middletons travelled extensively through Europe's great wine regions, particularly Bordeaux and Burgundy, developing a deep appreciation for elegant, refined wines. Their ambition was to produce wines of similar finesse in Australia, focusing on French grape varieties, moderate alcohol and a sense of place. John was particularly inspired by Colin Preece, then Senior Winemaker at Seppelts Great Western, who believed Australia had yet to produce a truly refined and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 1971, John and Marli discovered the property that would become Mount Mary. Its gentle, north-facing slopes offered ideal conditions for growing premium wine grapes, despite never having been planted to vines. The first plantings were completed by mid-1972, and today the estate encompasses approximately 40 acres of vineyards planted to 18 varieties.

Mount Mary produces four estate wines, each reflecting the family's admiration for the great wines of France. Quintet and Triolet take inspiration from the traditional blends of Bordeaux, while Pinot Noir and Chardonnay draw on the heritage of Burgundy. All wines are made exclusively from estate-grown fruit, with every stage of production, from vineyard to bottling, carried out on the property.

Over the decades, Mount Mary has developed a devoted following among collectors and wine enthusiasts, with its wines distributed through a private mailing list and a carefully selected network of restaurants and independent retailers. The estate's commitment to quality, independence and complete control over production has remained unchanged since its founding.

In the Vineyard

Environmental responsibility has become an increasingly important part of Mount Mary's philosophy. More than half of the property is dedicated to land beyond wine production, with ongoing efforts focused on biodiversity, native vegetation, water conservation and energy efficiency.

The estate continues to invest in revegetation projects, native habitat restoration and improved water management systems. These initiatives include rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, renewable energy planning and the restoration of natural wetlands. The aim is to reduce reliance on external resources while preserving the health and biodiversity of the surrounding landscape.

Although Mount Mary is not certified organic or biodynamic, its vineyard management places considerable emphasis on soil health and sustainable farming practices. Compost, organic fertilisers and straw mulch are used to improve soil structure, encourage microbial activity and retain moisture.

Machinery use is kept to a minimum to reduce soil compaction, while cover crops are planted in alternating rows to promote biodiversity, improve soil health and encourage beneficial insects that assist with natural pest management. Chemical treatments are used only when necessary, with the long-term goal of maintaining a healthy, resilient vineyard ecosystem.

This thoughtful approach to both viticulture and winemaking reflects the philosophy that has guided Mount Mary for more than five decades: producing elegant, expressive wines while preserving the land for future generations.
