Description

Keyneton Euphonium is one of Henschke’s most enduring and celebrated reds, named after the brass band once led by founder Joseph Henschke in the Barossa village of Keyneton during the 19th century. First released in the 1960s, the wine has become a benchmark for blended styles in the region, showcasing Shiraz alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Fruit is sourced from both Eden Valley and Barossa Valley vineyards, many of them old-vine sites, and farmed with the Henschke family’s ongoing commitment to organics and biodynamics.

The 2021 vintage, from a near-perfect growing season, delivers both power and poise. Deep crimson-purple in colour, it opens with aromas of blackberry, mulberry, cassis, and plum, layered with sage, cedar, and baking spice. The palate is rich yet refined, offering concentrated dark fruits wrapped in fine-grained tannins and lifted by bright natural acidity from the higher-altitude Eden Valley fruit. Notes of black olive, tobacco, and earth add savoury complexity, leading to a long, elegant finish. The balance of intensity and freshness suggests excellent ageing potential over the next 15+ years.

For the Henschke family, now in its sixth generation under Stephen and Prue Henschke, Keyneton Euphonium represents the harmony of tradition and innovation: a wine that reflects both the Barossa’s heritage and the family’s meticulous vineyard stewardship. It remains a benchmark for Australian red blends—layered, expressive, and built to last.
