Often regarded as the Premier Cru vineyard most closely resembling the Grand Crus, Montée de Tonnerre sits immediately adjacent to the famous Grand Cru slope. Billaud-Simon farms over two hectares across the climat, with parcels planted on south and south-west facing slopes of Kimmeridgian limestone and clay. The vineyard’s privileged position produces wines of remarkable complexity, combining mineral intensity, floral elegance, concentration and structure. Fermentation and élevage take place primarily in stainless steel to preserve purity and site expression.

The 2023 vintage highlights everything that makes Montée de Tonnerre one of Chablis’ greatest Premier Crus. The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing citrus zest, white flowers, oyster shell, wet stone and delicate spice. On the palate, the wine is layered, powerful and remarkably harmonious, balancing ripe fruit with vibrant acidity and pronounced mineral drive. There is both richness and tension here, with a long, precise finish that hints at significant ageing potential. A wine of Grand Cru stature in all but name.
