Description
The Tyrrell family-owned Old Hillside Vineyard is located on Marrowbone Road, Pokolbin and contains the ‘Old Patch’ planted in 1867. Old Hillside Shiraz is made from the younger vines on this site, with an average vine age of 50 years. It is a steep, eastern facing block that is protected by the Brokenback mountain range. The block features darker, richer soils than the soils at Ashmans property.
In the lead up to the 2023 vintage, there was an abundance of rain in spring which gave great soil moisture heading into the dry months of December and January. The harvest period was relatively stress-free without any adverse conditions such as rain or heat. This vintage has produced well balanced, complex wines with fruit purity and is considered to be an exceptional Hunter Valley vintage.
Between 27 February and 2 March, the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation took place in our open top vats. After fermentation, the wine was matured in three-year-old French oak casks (2700L) for 14 months.
Incredibly bright red in colour with medium purple hues. Lifted, bright red fruit aromatics. Mineral with red fruits, raspberry and cranberry with a saline finish. Medium density and purity and length that will open up with time. An elegant and bright Old Hillside, echoing the ‘Hunter River Burgundies’ of the past.
