The 2023 Shaw + Smith Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz is a beautifully savoury, cool-climate expression of Shiraz from the Adelaide Hills. There’s a strong northern Rhône feel to the wine, with layers of black olive brine, black and pink peppercorn, dried herbs and cured meats sitting over dark cherry and blackberry fruit. Whole-bunch fermentation adds an attractive lifted spice and stemmy complexity, while the palate remains medium-bodied, energetic and finely structured. Despite its perfume and approachability, there’s serious structure underneath, built around long, fine tannins and freshness.
