Description
'Made since 1958, it is the result of blending grapes from different vineyards in the area of origin. It is the wine that has made the company's history, its flagship wine, synonymous with quality and typicality throughout the world.
2022 was characterized from the early stages of winter by an unusual weather situation with lack of rainfall and mild weather.
After a light snowfall (2.0 inches) early December in Barbaresco the rest of the winter passed dry. Beginning of the growing season was in line and the fact that seemed evident from the beginning was the lack of reserve water into the soil. Spring continued in fine weather with just few millimeters rainfall (1.0 inch) on May 3rd the only notable precipitation of the all Springtime. Due to this condition flowering occurred in the last decade of May, about a week earlier than average.
The months of June and July saw a continuation of the trend of good weather and high temperatures. Vines self-adjusted to the scarcity of water with lower vegetative development and restrained bunch size. It was a quite unusual sight given the fact that we are used in the Langhe to lushly green vineyard canopy all through the summer months. In 2022 the green was kind of pale and you could almost feel a lack of vigor in the vine rows. On the good side, no problems at all with fungal attacks and the agronomic management of the vineyards turned out to be rather simple with a net decrease of the necessary fungicide treatments. Particularly important was the management of the foliage to cope with the long sunny summer days in order to maintain a proper shading of the clusters and avoid damage related to excessive exposure to the sun.
The harvest was generally early, but only by one week for Nebbiolo, which once again demonstrates its unique bond with the terroir, surprisingly managing to adapt to extreme conditions better than other grape varieties grown in the region. Harvesting in Barbaresco began on the 22nd of the month and ended on October 3rd without interruption. The berry size was smaller than average and the ratio pulp to skin in favor of the latter. This ensured an excellent extraction of tannins and aromatics, despite the not so intense color of the must at crushing.
In conclusion we can say that despite water stress throughout the season, Nebbiolo was able to give balanced wines with pleasant fruit and good aromatic richness. Lower-than-average yields and perfect crop health played in its favor and Barbaresco 2022 looks like a wine destined to surprise your palate in a positive way.'
