Description
Pascal Cotat is renowned for producing some of the most singular and long-lived expressions of Sancerre, working from a handful of exceptional parcels in Chavignol that his family has farmed for generations. After inheriting his share of the family vineyards in the 1990s, Pascal remained committed to traditional methods: harvesting late by hand to capture maximum ripeness, fermenting naturally with indigenous yeasts, aging in older demi-muids and tonneaux, and bottling unfined and unfiltered. His philosophy favors purity and authenticity, resulting in wines of remarkable depth and character that evolve beautifully over time.
‘La Grande Côte’ is a steeply sloped vineyard planted on classic terres blanches soils of chalk and clay, giving the wines both richness and tension. The 2022 vintage carries the vineyard’s hallmark energy yet shows the generosity of a warm growing season. Aromas of citrus zest, pear, and white peach are layered with floral hints and a distinctive flinty edge. The palate is broad and textural, with ripe stone fruit at the core balanced by a spine of chalky minerality and precise acidity. Notes of herbs and spice linger on the long, saline finish, adding further dimension. This cuvée demonstrates both power and elegance, with the structure to reward careful cellaring, gradually unfolding richer, more Burgundian nuances with age.
