La Serena has been in the Mantengoli family for over 90 years, but it wasn’t until 1988 that brothers Andrea and Marcello began producing wine under their own label. Today the estate spans 9 hectares, with 6 hectares devoted entirely to Sangiovese for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino.

Set due east of Montalcino and neighboured by Cerbaiona, Casanova di Neri and Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo, the vineyards sit at 450 metres above sea level. The soils, resembling the galestro of Montosoli but looser in structure with layers of sand and clay, yield wines that are accessible even in youth. Vines are cane-pruned in the traditional capovolto Toscano style and planted at a density of 6,000 per hectare. Certified organic since 2013, the estate is farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, with cover crops and beneficial insects encouraged to keep the ecosystem in balance.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and since 2009 the wines have been matured exclusively in large casks (2,000–4,000 L), a choice that preserves purity and finesse.
