Description
Farr Rising Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard planted in 2001, established with a mixture of rootstocks and three Pinot Noir clones: MV6, 114 and 115. The vineyard sits on an exposed north-facing slope, where the vines grow in grey sandy loam mixed with ironstone pebbles (buckshot) at the top of the site, transitioning into black volcanic soil over limestone lower down the slope.
The fruit is hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation in open-top fermenters. During vinification, approximately 60–70% of the fruit is destemmed, allowing a balance between structural complexity and pure fruit expression. The wine is then transferred by gravity to Allier French oak barrels, of which 20–30% are new, where it undergoes maturation before bottling after around eighteen months.
Aromatically the wine shows a soft and perfumed bouquet that gradually builds in intensity, reflecting the exposed vineyard site and the depth of fruit from the Moorabool Valley. The palate combines subtle sweetness with mineral undertones and gentle toasty oak, leading to firm yet refined flavours and a long, savoury finish.
Elegant yet structured, Farr Rising Pinot Noir offers both immediate appeal and the capacity to evolve in bottle, with typical vintages capable of aging for five to eight years.
