Description
Founded in 1979 by Phillip Jones, Bass Phillip has become Australia’s most revered specialist in Pinot Noir, with a global reputation for producing wines of Burgundian finesse and longevity. Now under the stewardship of Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin) alongside a dedicated local team, the estate continues to pursue low-yield viticulture, meticulous vineyard work, and minimal-intervention winemaking. All vineyards are farmed organically, with many practices inspired by biodynamics, ensuring wines that capture both purity and site character.
The 2021 Estate Pinot Noir is a reflection of Gippsland’s cool, maritime climate and the estate’s hallmark precision. In the glass, it reveals lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, laced with hints of rose, spice, and forest floor. The palate is finely textured, combining vibrant fruit with silky tannins and a gentle mineral thread. Bright natural acidity carries the flavours long, finishing with elegance and savoury complexity. The balance of depth and freshness marks this as one of the most refined expressions of the Estate cuvée in recent years.
Bass Phillip remains a benchmark for Australian Pinot Noir, often compared with the finest examples from Burgundy. The Estate bottling is a gateway into the house style—layered, graceful, and ageworthy—while representing exceptional value relative to the rarefied single-vineyard releases.
