Like many Piedmontese families, the Altare family has been cultivating Dolcetto in the Dogliani region for five generations. Young Nicholas developed a deep attachment to the land, so much so that he wept when the grapes were sold. In 2017, he produced his first Dolcetto DOCG at the nearby winery of his friend and mentor, Ferdinando Principiano. Only 1,500 bottles were made, selling out within days. Following this success, Nicholas planted Barbera and Nebbiolo vines and committed to organic and sustainable practices. By 2018, he had established his own winery, producing 8,500 bottles of Dolcetto alongside Barbera and Nebbiolo.
