Description
Bass Phillip, founded in 1979 and today guided by Burgundian vigneron Jean-Marie Fourrier alongside a skilled local team, is best known for world-class Pinot Noir but also produces a small amount of Gamay. The plantings reflect a natural extension of the estate’s philosophy: organically farmed vineyards, low yields, and minimal-intervention winemaking that allow purity of fruit and terroir to shine.
The 2023 Gamay captures the freshness and charm of this variety in Gippsland’s cool, maritime climate. Bright ruby in colour, it opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, cranberry, wild strawberry, and subtle floral notes, accented by spice and a hint of earth. The palate is lively and juicy, with crunchy red fruits framed by fine tannins and refreshing acidity. A gentle savoury edge provides balance, while the finish is clean, vibrant, and moreish. Partial whole-bunch fermentation adds aromatic lift and texture, without overshadowing the fruit’s natural energy.
Though produced in very limited quantities, Bass Phillip Gamay has quickly become a cult favourite for its combination of immediacy and sophistication. It is both a versatile, food-friendly red and an authentic reflection of the estate’s meticulous approach—delivering elegance, precision, and a touch of playfulness.
