Description

Founded in 1979 by Phillip Jones, Bass Phillip has become Australia’s most revered specialist in Pinot Noir, with a global reputation for producing wines of Burgundian finesse and longevity. Now under the stewardship of Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin) alongside a dedicated local team, the estate continues to pursue low-yield viticulture, meticulous vineyard work, and minimal-intervention winemaking. All vineyards are farmed organically, with many practices inspired by biodynamics, ensuring wines that capture both purity and site character.

The 2023 release perfectly captures why this Gippsland legend continues to inspire such devotion: bright citrus and white peach notes layered with hints of struck match and gentle oak spice. The palate is finely etched yet creamy, balancing precision with grace. Crafted with the same meticulous, low-intervention philosophy as its flagship wines, it’s expressive, focused, and effortlessly elegant.

Bass Phillip remains a benchmark for Australian Chardonnay, often compared with the finest examples from Burgundy. The Estate bottling is a gateway into the house style—layered, graceful, and ageworthy—while representing exceptional value relative to the rarefied single-vineyard releases.
