History

Since its founding in 1900 by Antonio Scarpa, the Scarpa winery has upheld a tradition of elegance, longevity, and meticulous craftsmanship. Antonio, originally from Burano, Venice, moved to Nizza Monferrato, where he discovered a land rich with untapped winemaking potential. Alongside his wife, Ernestina Ottavia Deantonio, he established the "Stabilimento Enologico Scarpa," a winery dedicated to producing exceptional Barbera. Their vision was clear: to elevate the reputation of this overlooked varietal and reveal its capacity for aging and refinement.

By the 1930s, Scarpa had become one of Piedmont’s most esteemed wineries, pioneering advancements in red wine aging, Metodo Classico sparkling wines, and vermouth production. The first vintage of Barolo in 1940 solidified its presence in the Langhe, and Scarpa remains one of the few wineries permitted to bottle Barolo outside its designated region. Under Mario Pesce, a winemaker trained in Burgundy and Alsace, Scarpa refined its philosophy, incorporating selective harvesting, careful vineyard management, and extended aging in large barrels to highlight the finesse and longevity of its wines.

Pesce’s leadership extended beyond the winery. As president of the Commission for the Improvement of Asti Wines, he championed investments that enhanced viticulture and winemaking techniques in Monferrato. His influence also reached international audiences, as he welcomed importers and journalists from around the world, pairing legendary wines with thoughtfully curated dining experiences. His legacy remains visible in Scarpa’s distinctive bottle design, inspired by Antonio’s original sketches, ensuring optimal aging potential.

In 1969, Pesce’s nephew, Carlo Castino, joined the winery and played a pivotal role in securing its future. His acquisition of Poderi Bricchi, a stunning 25-hectare vineyard, allowed Scarpa to fully control its production, from vineyard to bottle. It was here that La Bogliona, an outstanding Barbera d’Asti, was born—realizing Antonio Scarpa’s original dream. Castino also expanded the vineyard’s diversity, planting native varietals such as Freisa, Ruchè, Dolcetto, Brachetto, and Timorasso, reinforcing Scarpa’s commitment to Piedmont’s terroir.

Following Castino’s retirement in 2007, enologist Silvio Trinchero took the helm, preserving Scarpa’s philosophy while embracing new opportunities. Today, Scarpa continues to honor its past while expanding into the prestigious crus of Langhe and Monferrato, producing wines that capture the essence of time and place. More than just a winery, Scarpa has become an immersive experience with the creation of Scarpa Villas, a haven of beauty and luxury amidst UNESCO-protected vineyards, where the excellence of wine meets the art of living.

 

 Vineyard

 

Scarpa cultivates over 30 hectares of vineyards spanning Monferrato and Langhe, two of Italy’s most esteemed wine regions. Despite their distinct landscapes, both share an ancient geological heritage, shaped by primeval seabeds rich in marl, sand, and limestone—soils that provide the perfect foundation for viticulture. The rolling hills, warmed by Ligurian breezes, offer an ideal microclimate that nurtures native grape varieties, including Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Moscato, Ruchè, and Timorasso. These territories, designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, stand as a testament to their unparalleled enological significance.

Poderi Bricchi, Scarpa’s most historic vineyard, is nestled between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme. Acquired in 1969, this 25-hectare single-body estate sits at the highest point of the hill, surrounded by the woodlands of Alto Monferrato and fragrant lavender fields. Poderi Bricchi embodies Scarpa’s philosophy of complete vertical integration, where every stage of production, from grape to bottle, is meticulously overseen to ensure the utmost quality. The vineyard’s northeast and southwest exposures provide optimal sun exposure, fostering the nuanced expressions of Barbera, Ruchè, Brachetto, Dolcetto, Freisa, Moscato, and Timorasso.

In the prestigious Barolo region, Scarpa cultivates the esteemed Monvigliero and Roncaglie vineyards. Monvigliero, acquired in 2018, is considered the grand cru of Verduno, renowned for its refined and aromatic Nebbiolo. With a prime south and southwest exposure at 300 meters, this vineyard captures the essence of Barolo’s elegance and finesse. Not far away, the Roncaglie vineyard, located on the border of Verduno and La Morra, benefits from silty-loamy soils enriched with sand. This southeast-facing site produces profound and structured Barolo wines, characterized by their longevity and delicate aromatic complexity.

Scarpa’s presence extends to Neive, an area celebrated for its Nebbiolo grapes used in Barbaresco. Since the 1960s, Scarpa has sourced fruit from this esteemed terroir, ultimately acquiring vineyards in the Canova cru in 2018. Situated on a panoramic ridge between Langhe and Monferrato, Canova’s west-facing slopes provide an ideal environment for Nebbiolo and Chardonnay, further enriching Scarpa’s portfolio of exceptional wines.

Through its diverse vineyard holdings, Scarpa remains dedicated to crafting wines that honor tradition while embracing innovation. Each site, carefully selected for its unique terroir, contributes to the winery’s enduring legacy—one rooted in patience, precision, and a deep reverence for the land.

 

The Wines

2022 Casascarpa Barbera d’Asti DOC
Juicy, bright, and effortlessly drinkable. A pure expression of Barbera with spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention. Aged in stainless steel to preserve its freshness. Bursting red cherry, wild berries, and a touch of spice. Lively acidity, soft tannins, and a lingering, mouthwatering finish. Instantly charming.

2021 “Bric du Nota” Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Hand-harvested from select parcels. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in large neutral oak for finesse. A Nebbiolo that speaks of elegance and purity.
Delicate rose petals, wild strawberries, and a whisper of spice. Light-bodied yet structured, with fine tannins and a mineral core. Silky, lifted, and precise.

2019 Rouchet “Briccorosa” Rosso Monferrato DOCG
Ruchè in its most seductive form. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged in neutral oak to enhance its natural complexity. A rare and expressive take on this aromatic variety. Vibrant floral notes, crushed raspberries, and exotic spices. Medium-bodied, fresh, and slightly savory. A wine of character and charm with a lingering, perfumed finish.

2019 Tettineive Barbaresco DOCG
From the historic Canova cru in Neive. Fermented naturally, aged in large Slavonian oak for depth and balance. A textbook Barbaresco, refined and age-worthy. Perfumed with violets, ripe red cherries, and hints of dried herbs. The palate is taut yet graceful, with silky tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Time will only enhance its beauty.

2019 "Tettimorra" Barolo DOCG
Nebbiolo at its peak. Hand-harvested, long maceration, and slow aging in large oak barrels. A wine of patience, precision, and undeniable presence.
Deep and layered—black tea, dried roses, wild berries. Firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and a finish that lingers for minutes. Classic, poised, built for the cellar.
