The May rain, usually something we fear as negative being so close to flowering time, was a blessing allowing the stressed vineyards to get some very needed water supply. On the other side the rain made downy mildew disease management crucial and delicate. The long experience in this field of the piemonte farmers in general secured a tight control of the disease avoiding mildew crises. Overall, we must say that in a vintage like 2023 the May rain was favorable and help to “save” an otherwise difficult growing season.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy early June the dry and warm climatic pattern returned and become particularly intense in the second half of August until the 28th of the month when a rainy day brought some relief from the hot temperatures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeptember was warm and dry until the 24th when night temperatures drop down and a “decent” excursion between night and day temperatures helped the final ripening of the grapes.  We started the Nebbiolo harvest on October 3rd with sunny conditions and the harvest lasted the usual two weeks without any issue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2023 was a difficult season, vineyards planted in the warmest, drier exposure showed clear signs of hydric stress, reduced crop and reduced canopy growth. June brought warmer weather and a couple of short rainstorms and was followed by a warm, but below average July. Over all a nice summer, dry, but never too hot. An intense rainstorm come on August 2nd, with limited, localized hail damage. The middle of August, second and third week, was the hottest time of the year when the maximum temperatures were close to 35°C\/95°F. First half of September remained warm while the second half brought the cooler nights so important for a proper Nebbiolo maturation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe harvesting of Nebbiolo began on October 6th and it was over in Barbaresco by October 18th. The grapes were healthy, with optimal phenological maturity facilitated by the intense day-night temperature variations. In terms of quantity, crop loads were optimal and well-balanced, with visibly smaller berries than last year. In 2022 the green was kind of pale and you could almost feel a lack of vigor in the vine rows. On the good side, no problems at all with fungal attacks and the agronomic management of the vineyards turned out to be rather simple with a net decrease of the necessary fungicide treatments. Particularly important was the management of the foliage to cope with the long sunny summer days in order to maintain a proper shading of the clusters and avoid damage related to excessive exposure to the sun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe harvest was generally early, but only by one week for Nebbiolo, which once again demonstrates its unique bond with the terroir, surprisingly managing to adapt to extreme conditions better than other grape varieties grown in the region. Harvesting in Barbaresco began on the 22nd of the month and ended on October 3rd without interruption. The berry size was smaller than average and the ratio pulp to skin in favor of the latter.
